Leo Fitzmaurice’s Arcadia (2007) is one element of a multi-part sculpture based on the conventions of public signage. The works are part of the artist’s ongoing interest in what the he terms ‘information-objects’. His work looks at how these objects are designed to relate to us physically within the environment. With Arcadia the artist has substituted the factual information, usually found on these signs, for something more poetic, allowing viewers to enjoy this material, along with the space around it in a new and more open-ended way.

Arcadia was originally commissioned by YSP where an earlier version of Arcadia still resides.

Artist Biography

Leo Fitzmaurice

Leo Fitzmaurice (b. Shropshire 1963) lives and works in Merseyside. He studied painting at Leicester Polytechnic, Liverpool Polytechnic and Manchester Metropolitan University. In 2004 Fitzmaurice was invited by the British Council to take part in the Artist Links residency at Vitamin Creative Space, Guangzhou, China. Since then he has shown work at numerous galleries including: Seventeen Gallery, London; Tanya Leighton Galley, Berlin; and Dodge, NY. Solo projects have been hosted by: New Art Gallery Walsall; Firstsite, Colchester; Caustic Coastal, Manchester, and The Sunday Painter, London, In 2015 he made a new work Litter for Frieze Sculpture Park, London which is currently installed at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Most recently Fitzmaurice worked with The Arts Council Collection to produce the solo exhibition Between You Me and Everything Else at The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool In 2012 Fitzmaurice was the winner of the 5th Northern Art Prize.
